Plain of jars, Phonsavan, Laos

The drive here was curvy and mountainous. We passed many small villages all dwelling along the cliffside with huts made of straw, weeds, bamboo and whatever natural resources available. Not sure what they do for work but I read the villagers in these parts are more of a Chinese decent than Lao. They keep to themselves and live a very simplistic life getting by with the bare necessities. I hear they grow a lot of opium as well. We rented a motor bike for the day to check out some sites and scenery around town. They have a number of hills with large hollowed out rocks that look like jars scattered all over. They are from an unknown origin, but may have been used for collecting and storing water or food. There are so many mines and undetonated bombs still all over northern Laos stop we were advised to stay on trails. There are many companies working to survey the areas. We then road 30km to the old capital that was annihilated by bombs during the Vietnam war. Not much of the old town was left besides a kiln, Buddha and a couple buildings. Nothing too special to see. They have since built a new city with a population of about 4000. We are still trying to make our way to Vietnam. We found this a bit challenging but I think we will be fine. We need to see if we can get tickets at our next destination. The bus company speaks little to no English so we never know ahead of time.
